The Hyperion Reading List
This month, Hyperion introduces the Hyperion Reading List. The Hyperion Reading List is a roster of the books in areas of concern to this publication that the editors of Hyperion consider to be indispensable to the well-developed life of the mind. They obey no ideological program; many are in contradiction to others. However, all are rigorous and insightful, and all serve the primary purpose of reading: to strop the mind.
The categories of suggested reading are culled from what the editors consider the primary areas of concern to a Nietzschean aesthetics. They are Aesthetics, Visual Art, Literature, Film, Theater, Ancient Greece, Music, Dance, and Photography. In addition, the editors have added one additional category: “Pertinent Works of Idiosyncratic Choice.” There, readers will find a list of titles that the editors cherish, often above all others. There is no other justification for these selections, no other reasoning behind them, other than our judgment that these are works too often overlooked. They are, simply, what we consider to be among the most valuable reading available. These works are among the high points of civilization, the reading of which contributes to the living of a civilized life.
And, of course, suggestions for additions to the list from readers are welcome.
